Summary
Jeep may be one of the oldest automakers, but that does not mean its vehicles are not still at the cutting edge of technology.
In fact, the American manufacturer plans to implement a variety of proactive measures to completely redefine the brand, including widespread electrification across the lineup and the introduction of several new models.
All while preserving the off-road capability that built Jeep’s reputation.
In short
- Jeep plans a 50% reduction in its emissions by 2030.
- By 2030, about 50% of Jeep vehicles sold in America should be 100% electric vehicles.
- As early as 2026 and 2027, we will see the Jeep Recon BEV and an electric Jeep Renegade.
- There is also talk of V8 powertrains returning on select models, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
New developments starting now
2026 marks the start of a new generation or a mid-cycle refresh for many Jeep models.
First, the iconic Wrangler gets a fairly significant mid-cycle refresh. That means the 2026 Jeep Wrangler represents an excellent choice for those who have been waiting to head out on an adventure.
To mark the brand’s 85th anniversary, the 2026 Jeep Wrangler will be available in 12 special trims that will be unveiled over the course of the year.
The first of these is the Jeep Wrangler MOAB 392. It also brings back a V8 engine that had been absent from the Jeep lineup for a few years. This powertrain delivers 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It can go from zero to 100 km/h in only 4.5 seconds.
This is, of course, just one example of models receiving major changes for the new year. Across the Jeep lineup, we also see:
- The return of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee
- A new design for the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- The arrival of the 2026 Jeep Recon BEV, a fully electric SUV
In short, we do not need to look far into the future to discover very interesting Jeep updates.
A pivot to electric that is only just beginning
The 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S is only the beginning of the electric revolution announced by the American manufacturer. Jeep plans to become a major player in electric vehicles by 2030.
As part of the larger Stellantis family, Jeep and the other manufacturers under this banner are all part of the group’s plan to become carbon neutral by 2038. On the way to that target, the goal calls for a 50% reduction in harmful emissions by 2030.
To reach this objective, the group projects that by 2030, 50% of the vehicles sold in the United States and across the Americas by Jeep and the rest of Stellantis will be 100% electric vehicles.
Jeep 4xe: fewer plug-in hybrids, more 100% electric vehicles
Some will have noticed that the 2026 Jeep lineup no longer includes the plug-in hybrid models once offered, such as the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.
However, this does not mean there are major changes in the manufacturer’s overall direction. Instead, it signals a reallocation of available resources.
Moreover, the 4xe badge should return to designate all Jeep vehicles that include a plug, such as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer S as well as the all-new Jeep Recon.
The decision to end production of plug-in hybrid models for 2026 was not made lightly. It aims to follow market demand.
Jeep will use the resources freed up by discontinuing these models to develop more competitive electric solutions, notably its new 100% electric models.
The 2027 Jeep lineup: a big step toward electrification
Although not all details are known about next year’s Jeep vehicle lineup, we already have several confirmations and rumours showing that the 2027 Jeep lineup will differ significantly from 2026.
For the current model year, we already see the 2026 Jeep Recon BEV, an electric SUV that transitions Jeep’s exceptional off-road capabilities to the powertrains of tomorrow.
In 2027, we also expect the 2027 Jeep Renegade to reappear, now as a fully electric Jeep SUV. This new model will serve as the entry-level SUV and is expected to start at around US$25,000, about C$35,000.
In addition, the Compass should also begin a new generation that will now offer electrified powertrains.
Finally, the Gladiator and the Wagoneer are also expected to offer plug-in hybrid trims. This will allow these typically higher-consumption SUVs to deliver electric range. This evolution promises notable fuel savings.
In short, as early as next year, we should see significant results from the Stellantis plan, across the entire Jeep lineup.
Reinvesting to grow: strengthening Jeep plants
Of course, to enable all this development of new electric powertrains, the manufacturer must invest in new resources.
Across all its brands, Stellantis plans to invest 13 billion dollars in new infrastructure and technology development. This investment naturally has several effects on Jeep.
First, there is news that the Belvidere assembly plant should reopen its doors, which will increase production of the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Compass for American markets. This initiative should take shape by 2027.
In the same vein, Jeep also plans to strengthen the Wrangler and Gladiator programs at the Stellantis assembly complex in Toledo.
All this supports the objective of Antonio Filosa, chief executive officer of the Stellantis group and former CEO of Jeep. He aims to double Jeep sales in America by 2030.
The 2028 Jeep Wrangler electric: a classic redefined
Among the major changes Jeep plans to introduce by enhancing the Wrangler programs in Toledo is the 2028 Jeep Wrangler electric.
Once announced as the complete electrification of Jeep Wrangler models, plans may have changed, and the Wrangler could continue to offer gas engines.
Either way, those who want to make the leap to electric without sacrificing the distinctive design and engaging performance of Jeep SUVs like the Wrangler will not have to wait long to find their favourite model in a greener form.
A possible return of Jeep V8 models
Among the new additions and major returns in Jeep’s expansion plans, we are pleased to rediscover an old favourite.
Although broad electrification is underway, Jeep does not intend to completely abandon the gas engine, which still offers certain advantages compared to electric powertrains.
Recently, Jeep hinted at the return of a V8 powertrain on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was discontinued in 2023.
Even if this is not necessarily the V8’s comeback, it is clear that new Grand Cherokee models will offer more powertrain options. Jeep confirmed this by acknowledging that Grand Cherokee fans want more options.
Jeep: always focused on off-road driving
There is a misconception that electric vehicles cannot deliver off-road performance as compelling as a gas vehicle.
Certainly, when the technology was younger, it had some shortcomings in that respect, but that is no longer the case.
As the manufacturer demonstrates with the 2026 Jeep Recon BEV, it continues to design outstanding off-road SUVs at a reasonable price, even during this transition period.
Whether today, in 2026, or in the coming years, Jeep intends to remain the reference for off-road capability and incomparable outdoor experiences.
